How school sports has impacted Samuel's life:
Before high school, I had a narrow friend group. Having only friends from hockey shaped my personality going into freshman year. I wasn’t comfortable talking to upperclassmen because I thought I didn’t have anything in common with them. However, being on the high school tennis and hockey team gave me an opportunity to get to know juniors and seniors. The upperclassmen I met as a freshman set the example of how I should act as a senior. By not forgetting I was a shy freshman four years ago, I’ve started welcoming new members to every organization I’m involved in. The largest barrier to clubs like Relay or Science Olympiad growing is making people feel like they belong to the team. By treating school clubs like a sports team anyone can join, new members feel comfortable helping their community or exploring their passions. The structure of my sports teams taught me that tight bonds are the best way to grow any organization.

High school athletics has affected every aspect of my life. I have grown tremendously through my participation in sports. I can now look back and say that I would not be the person I am today without high school athletics. They allowed me to grow. They pushed me to succeed. They showed me that I was capable of so much more than the limits of my mind. Athletics taught me to push through the hardship, the struggle, and the trials because the reward would be worth every moment. I know that I have become a confident, strong leader because of my experience in high school sports. I credit every ounce of courage to athletics. They have taught me to believe in the power that I have. Through my participation in athletics, I have discovered that my future is bright and full of possibility. I can achieve anything, and I now know that through hard work, courage, and determination, I will become the leader I aspire to be.
